Dance & Choreography
The Simi Valley High School Dance Team is now a complete dance program at Simi Valley High School, offering 4 different levels of dance in all styles (including tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, musical theater, contemporary, and hip hop) for all students. Anyone who is interested can be placed in a dance class, whether you have years of experience, or are interested in learning dance from the very beginning! We perform at school events and 2 of our own showcases. Students get the opportunity to do some of their own choreography, as well as work with experienced and well-known choreographers. Dance is also a pathway, which means students who complete at least two years in the program will be eligible for special acknowledgments at graduation. The dance team was founded in 2015 and has grown exponentially since. If you are interested, information for the new year always comes out in February, and auditions for class placement are early in June. Under the direction of Mrs. Jen Horn, the dance team is home to over 180 students at SVHS, and we welcome any and all who are interested! Be a part of the legacy!
DANCE 1: An introductory/technique building level course. Students will be exposed to various styles of dance, learn various pieces of choreography, and begin to train for performances. They will also be working with and learning from peer tutors who are in dance 4.
DANCE 2: A secondary/technique and performance building level course. Students will focus more on hip hop and style. They will experiment with their own choreography, perform at some school events (including a football game), and practice working in groups in other styles of dance. They will also be working with and learning from peer tutors who are in dance 4.
DANCE 3: The third level course in our dance program. Students will learn choreography from outside choreographers quickly, perform at most school events and 3 football games, and do some of their own choreography in various styles. These students will also get to spend more dedicated time working on the choreography, as we will meet during a regular class period. They will also be working with and learning from peer tutors who are in dance 4.
DANCE 4: The third level course in our dance program. Students will learn choreography from outside choreographers quickly, perform at most school events and 5 football games, and do some of their own choreography in various styles. I would like to explain the difference between maroon, gold, and white groupings. Since we have so many students on the dance team, this will simply help me and my choreographers when assigning choreography and practice times throughout the year. All groups will perform at varsity events. We will never dance at JV football, basketball, etc. The difference is simply who learns what piece of choreography. Each performance will consist of sections - maroon, gold, and white each learning a section, and then coming together to dance at the end. Practice times will be assigned by both style and group.
